How would you define global awareness? Global awareness is understanding, working with and collaborating with people of different cultures, diversity and religious beliefs. Global awareness will foster cross cultural understanding which will promote worldwide change. It is also having respect and compassion for these differences. How we teach is as important as what we teach because we need to provide teachable moments (role play, cooperative learning opportunities, and collaboration) for students to experience empathy and compassion for other cultures. To what extent would you say global awareness is an important 21st century skill? Please explain your answer Global awareness is the backbone of 21st century skills. For students or people in general to communicate and make change in our world, they need to be able to collaborate, understand and have respect and awareness of different cultures of our world. Global awareness must be taught to our students as one of the essential tools to access future jobs, become leaders and advocates for change. Our world is interconnected, we are experiencing the same global problems whether it is population or climate change, pollution or economic strain. Our world as we know it is not linear and therefore our teaching as Ken Robinson states can not be linear either. Twenty first century skills or the use of technology are the tools to access the means or connecting with the world fostering global awareness and change. Our students through the use of technology can connect with people and classrooms all over the world participating in global service which transfers to global action.

In your post, brainstorm what you believe are some of the 21st century problems and issues regarding Global Awareness. Global Awareness in Education Article How would I use in my class? First, I would learn and become MUCH better at navigating the google map site. I would also spend time in class modeling various aspects of the site and collaborate with the technology teacher making sure the students had time to navigate the site too. I could envision google maps working well in our immigration unit. Students could map out the migration route that their ancestors took. It could also be used as a study guide for students during the unit on the Nile River. Students are responsible for creating a paper version of the journey of the Nile River. Many students that have difficulty with fine motor skills, drawing small pictures with detailed summaries and organizational issues would benefit greatly from a digital map verses a traditional drawn paper map. Also, many students have difficulty determining distance using a map scale. Again, this is another way to show how to navigate a map and reinforce map skills. They make connections about proximity and distance between places and relationships about developed and developing countries. They can see landforms and begin to make connections about how landforms can shape countries and provide resources for it's people and why various places are over populated or under populated. Maps provide visual learning and students will gain global awareness when visualizing and manipulating maps in relation to the entire world and not just the small city or town that they reside in.
